Yomu: Privacy Policy

This privacy policy describes how Yomu ("we", "the app") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Yomu mobile app.

1. Information we collect

Yomu collects the minimum information needed to provide the app's features.

a. Information you provide directly

  • Google Account profile (name, email address, profile picture) — only if you choose to sign in with Google. We use this solely to identify you in the app. We do not write to your Google account, contacts, calendar, or any other Google service.
  • Language preference — your chosen UI language (English or Indonesian).

b. Information generated by your use of the app

  • Learning progress — which kana you've learned, lesson completion status, streak count, XP earned, mastery counters. This is stored on your device only in local storage. We do not transmit it to our servers.
  • Purchase records — if you purchase "Remove Ads" through Google Play Billing, we store a receipt token on your device to validate the purchase across launches. The actual payment is handled entirely by Google Play.

c. Information collected by third parties

  • Google AdMob collects an advertising identifier and other technical data (device type, OS version, IP address, approximate location, ad interactions) to deliver ads. AdMob may use this data for advertising personalization unless you opt out (see Section 5).
  • Google Play Services (Sign-In and Billing) collects authentication tokens and purchase data to process transactions.

We do not run our own backend. We do not have user accounts on our servers. We do not collect your contacts, photos, microphone, camera, precise location, or any other sensitive data.

2. How we use information

Purpose Data used
Provide app functionality Learning progress (on-device), language preference
Identify you across sessions Google Sign-In profile
Deliver and measure ads AdMob advertising ID, device info
Process the "Remove Ads" purchase Google Play purchase token
Improve the app Aggregate, non-personal usage signals from Google services

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your data for any purpose beyond what's listed above.

3. Third-party services

Yomu relies on the following services. Their own privacy policies apply to the data they handle:

4. Data retention

  • On-device data (learning progress, language, purchase token): retained until you uninstall the app or use the "Reset all progress" option in Settings.
  • Google Sign-In profile: held in app memory only while you are signed in; cleared when you sign out.
  • AdMob data: retained by Google according to its own retention policy.

We do not retain any of your data on our own servers because we do not operate any servers that store user data.

5. Your choices and rights

  • Opt out of personalized ads — in Settings on your Android device, go to Google → Ads → Reset advertising ID / Opt out of Ads personalization. In the European Economic Area, UK, and Switzerland we present a consent dialog (Google's User Messaging Platform) on first launch where you can refuse personalized advertising.
  • Sign out of Google — Settings → Account → Sign out. This clears the cached profile.
  • Reset all progress — Settings → Reset all progress. This deletes all on-device learning data.
  • Remove Ads purchase — once purchased, ads are disabled. You can restore the purchase on a new device by signing in with the same Google account and using "Restore purchases" in Settings.
  • Uninstall — uninstalling Yomu removes all on-device data. AdMob advertising identifier resets are controlled by Android system settings.

European Economic Area, UK, Switzerland (GDPR)

You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict processing of, port, or object to processing of your personal data. Because we do not store personal data on our servers, most of these rights are exercised directly through your device settings, your Google account, or by uninstalling the app. For any remaining questions, email [your-email@example.com].

Legal basis for processing:

  • Consent for personalized advertising (via the in-app consent dialog).
  • Legitimate interest for non-personalized advertising and core app functionality.
  • Contract for processing the "Remove Ads" purchase.

California (CCPA)

California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected, to delete it, and to opt out of "sale" of personal information. Yomu does not sell personal information.

6. Children's privacy

Yomu is suitable for all ages and is not specifically targeted at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected such information without verified parental consent, we will delete it. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact [your-email@example.com].

Ads served in Yomu are subject to AdMob's family policies; you can disable advertising entirely by purchasing "Remove Ads".

7. Security

We rely on the security practices of Google Sign-In, Google AdMob, and Google Play Billing for any data they handle. Data stored on your device is protected by your device's standard sandboxing. No method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Effective date" at the top of this page will reflect the last change. Material changes will be communicated through the app or the Play Store listing.
